DeSoto CavernsWebsite Case Study
DeSoto Caverns had been a print client of our sister company, Starnes Publishing, for many years before making the jump to digital. When Joy Sorensen, the Director of Marketing, was promoted to President of DeSoto Caverns, she quickly realized that she didn’t have the time to run a company and create all of the marketing collateral she needed to promote her business.
Because of her already solid relationship with Starnes Publishing, partnering with Starnes Digital just made sense. The vast majority of her marketing was brought under one roof, including digital advertising, social media management, and a website redesign.
When DeSoto Caverns came to us, they had a modest website that wasn’t an accurate representation of all they have to offer. It wasn’t the most intuitive website, and it just lacked the overall “magic” of the DeSoto Caverns Brand.
For their new website, they wanted a site that could leverage modern design trends, while maintaining the integrity of their brand, all while showing off the majesty of DeSoto Caverns.
DeSoto Caverns was a unique project because of the level of specificity that the client brought to the project. Unlike the majority of our clients, who have only vague notions of what they want out of a website, DeSoto had very specific ideas about how they wanted their new website to look, feel, and function. In order to get this project right, we had to approach it with all of the client’s specific ideas in mind, and meld them together with our design expertise.
The guiding principle of this project was the overall design aesthetic. Because DeSoto Caverns is a visually stimulating place, it was important to find a aesthetic that mimicked this digitally.
Ultimately, we chose to lean heavily on pictures, including full bleed, parallax scrolling hero images for each page. In doing so, we were able to show off the many attractions that a visit to DeSoto Caverns has to offer, and get potential visitors excited about purchasing a ticket.
Going this route also gave us a simple solution to breaking up the large amount of information that the website had to offer. With a cave, over 20 attractions, a cafe, and numerous events throughout the year, DeSoto Caverns has a lot information that they need to give to potential visitors, and adding in visual elements, such as mid-page banners and icons, helped to break all of the information into more digestible chunks.
The overall result of this project was a modern website that digitally recreates the “magic” of DeSoto Caverns and accurately reflects everything the park has to offer.
